Ricky Martin has spoken of his support for US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and called out fellow Latinos supporting Donald Trump.
The pop star, who previously introduced Biden at an event in Florida where he commemorated the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack, explained his voting choice in a forthcoming interview with Variety. Â
âI think he is the only option we have,â he said. âHe is great and he has been in politics all his life. This is the moment. We all need to get together and be loud about the course of this nation.â
Martin said that he could not imagine voting for Trump, as a Latino, a gay man, and as someone âmarried to an Arabâ (his husband is Syrian painter Jwan Yosef).
He added that witnessing fellow Latinos support Trump was âscaryâ. Trump received 28 per cent of the Latino vote in 2016, with NBC predicting 30 per cent this year.
âIt is super sad,â he said, adding, âTrumpeters make a lot of noise. And itâs scary to see their enthusiasm but us, weâre doing whatâs right, the right way and weâll see what happens in November.â
Martin then said that he was optimistic about Bidenâs chances of securing a US presidency.
âI think when you have 50 million people voting already, itâs because we are not the only ones concerned about this and for that I am extremely happy,â he said.
Martinâs episode of The Big Ticket with Variety will be available to listen to and download on 3 November.
