Laura Dern thanks Kanye West for helping her earn 'cred' with her teenage kids

Laura Dern is a little more popular with her teenage kids and she has Kanye West to thank for it.

The "Big Little Lies" star appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" Tuesday, where the host put up a photo of West sporting a shirt with the actress' face on it. After discussing some of Dern's notable roles throughout the years, DeGeneres took the opportunity to point out that one of those characters ended up on a shirt that West wore out in public.

The shirt, which Dern said was part of designer Raf Simons' homage to director David Lynch, features a shot of Dern in the Lynch-directed movie "Blue Velvet."

"What he didn't know was that he actually gave me a tiny bit of cred in my household of teenagers, and I'm really grateful," Dern said.

Dern, who shares two kids, Ellery, 18, and Jay, 14, with her husband Ben Harper, jokingly requested that Degeneres give out a shirt with her face on it should any other rapper come on the show.

"It's really working for me guys," Dern said. "Every mother should somehow get this opportunity when their kids are like 15."

Other rappers Dern would like to see wearing her face? When DeGeneres asked which artists her kids were in to, the 52-year-old actress listed A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar.

"There is a slight self-serving aspect to this," Dern said. "Because I'm just not yelled at all the way to school. There's a break in it."
