The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN)'s megachurch drama Greenleaf follows the Greenleaf family and their Memphis congregation as they face various dramatic challenges.

In the fourth series, the Greenleafs are teaming up against the threat of losing Calvary to Bob Whitmore (Beau Bridges) and Harmony & Hope Ministries.

But with family secrets threatening to bubble up, they have to contend with each other, too. It's made for a compelling season arc.

“Bob wants to fold Calvary into Harmony & Hope," new season regular Bridges said of season four (via Shadow and Act).

"His vision is to have all people worship together. Black, white, whatever, and to worship in respect and freedom together. Bob believes that vision can’t succeed unless we have a strong Black leader in the pulpit so he appeals to Mae to be that person.”

Season four of Greenleaf is currently airing on OWN at the time of writing and is averaging a 0.22 rating in the 18-49 demographic, from 1.07 million viewers.

That means the show is down by 17% and 18% respectively – which aren’t great numbers, but maybe they’ll revive some lapsed audience members as the series continues.

Season five is yet to be commissioned, but it could happen any day now – season four was signed off while season three was still airing.

But what can we expect from the Greenleaf gang next year? We’ve prayed to our various gods for information. Here’s everything you need to know.

The series originally launched in June 2016, with the second season beginning in March the following year. Season three started in August 2018, with season four landing in September 2019.

So, Greenleaf jumps around quite a lot, but if we were to make a predication, we’d say that following the current season’s drop in ratings they’ll want to get things on a more regular track moving forward.

Expect OWN to return to that more successful August release date, or stick with the September debut when (if) season five arrives next year. Both options are better than trying out yet another calendar month for the show.

If it does land in September, UK viewers can expect it to arrive on Netflix in November 2020.

Keith David and Lynn Whitfield will return as Bishop James and Lady Mae, because they’re the stars. They’ll be joined by Deborah Joy Winans, Oprah Winfrey, LeToya Luckett, Lamman Rucker and Kim Hawthorne.

Last season Rick Fox (Darius Nash), soul legend Patti LaBelle (Maxine Patterson) and Homeland's Beau Bridges were all promoted to series regulars, so we’d expect them to return too. You know, unless this show turns into a Game Of Thrones style bloodbath and it ends in a Red Wedding (Red Sermon?). Spoiler: It won’t.

Season four is still airing at the time of writing, but we’ve had word from star Lynn Whitfield as to where her character will end up when we hit the finale. “I think the audience will leave this season feeling Lady Mae is more than just superficial,” Whitfield told Shadow and Act.

“She has substance, she can roll up her sleeves. At the base of everything is the fact that she was molested by her father. She was betrayed by her husband. Through oversight or mistake of some kind, lost her child. Those things need to be dealt with or released or something. I think we’ll see her grow this season.”

We’re sure those repercussions will be explored in season five.
