King Charles, 74, wants his coronation on May 6th to go off without a hitch; and while most people would assume that he and the palace think Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s presence (or lack thereof) would be his biggest concern, some reports are suggesting that it’s actually being upstaged by Kate Middleton. More specifically, her outfit!

King Charles’ alleged concerns do make sense, as Katie Nicholl recalled in her book The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown how he didn’t appear to like it when the late Princess Diana, who was regarded as a true style icon, pulled focus from him with her fashion choices when they were married.

King Charles Reportedly Doesn't Want To Be Upstaged At The Coronation

According to reports, King Charles understandably doesn’t want to be upstaged at his own coronation, which is why celebrity stylist and royal fashion expert Miranda Holder told Newsweek that Kate Middleton, 41, won't go bold with her coronation outfit. "Kate must be careful not to pull focus from the King with her outfit, which is why it won't be too 'out there,'" Holder noted. Holder isn’t the only one who reportedly believes this, as SheKnows wrote that "many experts say Kate is predicted not to upstage Charles by placating his biggest concern," and will therefore keep her outfit "on the less showstopping side."

King Charles' coronation is rumored to be just a third of the size of the late Queen Elizabeth II's, so could this mean that the dress code will be a little less extravagant too? The dress code for the coronation hasn’t been revealed yet, but previous coronations have seen women in the royal family dressed in showstopping, heavily-embellished evening gowns teamed with an abundance of jewelry and even tiaras. "We must remember that the coronation, despite its pared down new incarnation, is steeped in pageantry and tradition," Holder added.

What Will Kate Middleton Wear At The Coronation?

Although Holder has predicted that the mom-of-three won't go as bold as she *could* with her coronation outfit, she hinted that we can still expect to be kept "on our toes," like we have been over the past few months. (Need we remind you of *that* bright green Earthshot Prize Awards outfit?!) Holder also referenced how Kate switched things up at this year's BAFTAs, as although she recycled a previously-worn Alexander McQueen dress, she elevated it with some en-vogue opera gloves and statement earrings. The accessories, if we are to believe Holder, could be where Kate will surprise us at the coronation!

"Kate has embraced a fashion formula for previous important state events, typically wearing a coat dress ensemble from her favorite designer Alexander McQueen," Holder said, discussing Kate's recent fashion choices. "Before the BAFTAs this year I would have predicted that we may see more of the same. However, after the princess switched things up with the black evening gloves and over-sized earrings, I feel we are going to see elements of the traditional Kate such as the coat dress, complemented with some surprising elements to keep us on our toes, going forward. An unusual selection of accessories for example." Watch this space!
