Jason Momoa Struggled After 'Game Of Thrones': “No One Even Knew I Spoke English”
There’s a very real and very unfortunate dearth of beefcakes on TV nowadays. The last true Hollywood-standard hunk to grace our screens was Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, but we only got a single season out of him before he became one of the show’s many, many casualties (and no, you’re not getting a spoiler alert. It’s been eight years. Grow up.)
It wouldn’t be until 2018’s Aquaman that Jason Momoa would find another excuse to take his shirt off for hours at a time, and the Game of Thrones alumnus has admitted in a new interview with Esquire US that he struggled after leaving the HBO mega hit.
“I mean, where do you put Drogo? He’s not going in a rom-com,” he said in the November cover story. “No one even knew I spoke English.”
The 40-year-old actor had previously played a bare-chested warrior in 2011’s remake of Conan the Barbarian, and Momoa is candid (but far too modest) about his place in the industry.
“I’m not known for my acting,” he said. “I’m known for action. I don’t say a lot of things or use big sentences.”
The actor got his start on Baywatch in 1999, but it wasn’t until his casting in Game of Thrones, at the age of 32, that he truly got his big break. Winning that role later in his career proved to be a blessing, however.
Speaking of Timothée Chalamet’s early success, Momoa said: “He’s so fucking talented, man. I don’t know. I’m a little dumber, needed some time. Which is probably the best for me, because it would have been bad if it happened when I was younger. I just would have fucked it all up.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the Hawaiian actor spoke about his environmental activism. He wanted to be a marine biologist growing up, spurred on by the pollution he witnessed on the islands.
“Everyone just has no idea what you get to see firsthand when you live on an island,” he says. “All the shit and garbage that rolls up. The rising of the tides.”
