5 Things You Didn’t Know About Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney inherited a legacy of creativity, as well as a passion for animal rights, from her parents, Linda and Sir Paul McCartney. Like her parents, McCartney is famously a vegetarian, and her whole brand is committed to not using leather, skin, fur, or feathers—but she’s made a name of her own with a storied career in fashion.

Below, find five things you didn’t know about the English designer.

  1. You might assume the daughter of a Beatle would have led a rarefied private school existence, but the McCartneys were committed to giving their four children lives that were as normal as possible, and as a child McCartney attended local state schools. McCartney went on to study at the world-famous Central Saint Martins design school, where none other than Kate Moss ended up walking in her 1995 graduation presentation.

  2. She interned for Christian Lacroix at the age of 15. Designer Betty Jackson described the teenage McCartney as industrious, telling the Guardian, “[Her parents] had taught that you had to work hard to get what you want, and she worked really hard. All the menial tasks—making coffee, picking up pins, doing photocopying, going to get lunch for everybody, running bits of fabric around London. We made no concessions, and she didn’t expect any.”

  3. McCartney designed Madonna’s wedding dress for the singer’s 2000 Scottish wedding to Guy Ritchie. Royal watchers may recall that McCartney dressed Meghan Markle in a white halter gown for her private wedding reception in 2018. To top off her high-profile bridal accomplishments, McCartney also designed her own wedding dress, which was an updated version of the dress her mother, Linda, wore at her own wedding in 1969.

  4. Her career achievements have been recognized with a royal honor. In 2013 McCartney was presented with an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for excellence and service in the fashion industry. The award makes sense for McCartney, who was the creative director of legendary fashion house Chloé before starting her own eponymous line.

  5. Her favorite song is “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys, as she told Desert Island Discs. Can’t go wrong with a classic!
