NYC hostess allegedly punched after asking customers for proof of COVID vaccine required by city

When a New York City restaurant hostess asked customers visiting from Texas for proof of their COVID-19 vaccination, the group allegedly assaulted her.

On Thursday, NBC New York obtained footage of the alleged attack outside Carmine's Italian restaurant on the Upper West Side. The hostess was punched repeatedly and had her necklace broken, according to the New York City Fire Department.

The three suspects, ages 21, 44 and 49, were taken into NYPD custody, police said.

"It is a shocking and tragic situation when one of our valued employees is assaulted for doing their job — as required by city policies — and trying to make a living," Carmine's said in a statement to USA TODAY.

Proof of vaccine requirement: NYC enforcing proof of vax for indoor activities

In New York City, businesses can be fined $1,000 if they fail to ask customers for proof of vaccination in indoor venues.

“We do not want to go back to restrictions,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in August. “The key to our progress is vaccination.”

After viewing the video, Gale Brewer, the Manhattan borough president tweeted, "There’s no place for this kind of violence to be perpetrated against our essential workers."

New mandate rejected: Judge blocks New York's vaccine mandate for medical workers amid religious objections

Tony Moore, a host in a Contento in New York City, said he wasn't shocked after hearing about the attack. As tourists visit the city, they've become "increasingly agitated" with the proof of vaccine order. Moore said he's seen customers verbally assault and even spit on workers enforcing the mandate.

"People outside of New York want to come visit but not follow the rules, and so those on the frontlines, like hostesses, catch the heat," Moore told USA TODAY. "It's sad but the attack at Carmine's isn't surprising."
