Apparently, it doesn’t matter how famous you are — talking about your ex can be uncomfortable for anyone. And there may arguably never be a more perfect celebrity example than Nicole Kidman awkwardly recalling her relationship with Lenny Kravitz during a few downright cringeworthy moments on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Hey, rest assured, Nicole: It happens to the best of us. Granted, we didn’t all get to date Kravitz, but we won’t hold that against you. Welcome to the sometimes fumbling, often bumbling world of mere mortals and ex-relationship awkwardness!

So, how did one of the most elegant, poised women in Hollywood wind up flustered? Ironically, it happened during a segment designed to put Kidman’s Bombshell co-star Charlize Theron in the hot seat. The women, along with another Bombshell co-star, Margot Robbie, dropped by the Ellen show to release a new trailer for the film. Since Theron had recently revealed she was “shockingly single,” DeGeneres decided Kidman and Robbie would play matchmaker in a game of “Who Would Charlize Rather?” But the game, which pits potential celebrity suitors against one another, went awry when a picture of Lenny Kravitz popped up.

The secondhand embarrassment was palpable as Theron reminded the audience (and world) that Kidman and Kravitz had a relationship. Kidman struggled to regain her composure, telling DeGeneres to “move on” before joking to Theron, “You’re dead.” Our cheeks feel hot even re-watching it.

Interestingly, not many people (including DeGeneres) were aware of Kidman and Kravitz’s history. In case you’re also one of those people, here’s a quick recap. Kravitz and Kidman began dating around 2002, per People, after he was her landlord. Yes, really. They split sometime prior to 2007, around the time Kidman referenced a failed engagement while speaking to Vanity Fair. But since the only people aware of that seemed to be Kidman and Theron, Kidman may have been able to avoid the entire comically bad exchange if her nerves had gotten the best of her.

On the plus side, Kravitz did eventually get a ringing endorsement from Kidman, who told Theron, “I love Lenny. I so recommend him. He’s lovely.” The entire moment was inadvertently hilarious, and it just made us like Kidman even more. Girl, pull up a seat — we’re pros when it comes to being weird about past relationships.
