New York-style pizza chain to open near Empire Mall this spring
A new pizza joint is being added to the Sioux Falls restaurant scene later this year.
Pizzashop, a fast-casual restaurant originally based out of Belmar, New Jersey serves artisanal New York-style pizza and is planned to open a space near the Empire Mall in late April or early May.
The restaurant also serves a variety of Italian-flavored dishes, such as house-made meatballs, focaccia sandwiches, calzones and other offerings.
"Our philosophy is to do the highest quality we can do and let the business follow from there," owner Josiah Urban said.
Urban has since expanded Pizzashop to Oxford, Mississippi and plans to add locations in Austin and Frisco, Texas soon. He recently closed his New Jersey location to focus on expansions.
Sioux Falls stood out as the next destination because there are relatively few pizza choices per capita, Urban said.
"It's also the growth in Sioux Falls and the economy there," Urban said, adding that he believes it'll be a good market.
A building permit was issued by the city Feb. 4 to begin construction at the restaurant. Lloyd Construction Cos. is the listed contractor and the building valuation is listed at $140,000.
Pizzashop, at 4013 W. 41st St., behind Chick-fil-A, will be open for dine-in, take out and delivery. Urban plans to start hiring in early spring. The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
