Xavier Castaneda powers Akron Zips to rout of Western Michigan in MAC men's basketball

The University of Akron used a 12-0 run late in the first half to take control and then cruised to an 81-64 win over Western Michigan in a Mid-American Conference men's basketball game Saturday at Rhodes Arena.

Xavier Castaneda had 24 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Zips (20-9, 12-4), who led 35-25 at halftime and then never by less than 11 after Castaneda hit a 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring.

Enrique Freeman added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Nate Johnson 13 points for Akron, which closes the regular season next week at home Tuesday against Ball State and Friday at Kent State.

Seth Hubbard scored 19 points for the Broncos (7-22, 3-13).
