Wrestling: Aberdeen Central takes second, Watertown third in tourneys
Ten area wrestlers, including four from Watertown, won division titles in high school tournaments on Saturday at Mitchell and Gettysburg.
Here's a look at what area wrestlers did over the weekend:
Harrisburg Dual Tournament
HARRISBURG — Aberdeen Central went 3-1 and finished second in the Harrisburg Dual Tournament on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt 84-0, Shawnee Mission Northwest (IKan.) 78-6 and Tea Area 42-25 and lost to Harrisburg 39-27.
Ridley Waldo (120 pounds), Rayden Zens (126), Cole Dunlavy (182) and Jacob Krenz (285) each went 4-0 for Aberdeen Central. Will Allen (106), Tate Huff (132), Brody Aesoph (138), Logan Opitz (160) and Bryce Beitelspacher (220) each were 3-1.
Jerry Opbroek Invite
MITCHELL — Watertown crowned four champions and Milbank one in the Jerry Obroek Invitational.
Sturgis won the 10-team meet with 199.5 points. Pierre slipped past Watertown 191-189.5 for second. Milbank was sixth with 71.
Gage Lohr (106 pounds), Sloan Johannsen (120) and Weston Everson (126) each went 3-0 and won their divisions for the Arrows. Johannsen is now 26-0, Lohr 24-2 and Everson 24-3.
Other Arrow placers and their tourney records include Leo Stroup (2-2, 4th at 113), Derek Hanson, 2-2, 4th at 138), Ian Johnson (2-2, 4th at 152), Tucker Urdahl (2-2, 4th at 160), Jax Kettwig (2-1, 2nd at 170), Jackson Maag (2-2, 4th at 182), Brock Eitreim (1-1, 2nd at 195) and Matthew Peters (3-1, 3rd at 220).
Barrett Schneck went 3-0 and won the 170-pound title for Milbank. He is 16-0 on the season. Owen Fischer (3-1, 3rd at 106) and Brayden Christensen (2-1, 2nd at 145) also placed for the Bulldogs.
In the girls portion of the tourney, Katelyn Yexley went 2-0 and placed first at 132 for Watertown. Olivia Anderson (3-1, 2nd at 106), Kaitlynn Payne (0-2, 3rd at 120), Emma Wientjes (1-1, 2nd at 142) and Allison Konrad (0-2, 2nd at 190) also placed for the Arrows. Dani Batchelor of Clark-Willow Lake went 3-1 and took second at 113.
Battler Invitational
GETTYSBURG — Five area wrestlers won division titles Saturday in the Battler Invitational.
South Border (N.D.) won the 24-team tourney with 254.5 points. Deuel led area teams by taking fifth with 104 points.
Cooper Pommer of Clark-Willow Lake (106), Haeden Jorgenson of Webster Area (132) and Christian Ehresmann of Groton Area (138) each won titles in the boys division. Pommer and Ehresmann each went 4-0 and Jorgenson 3-0. Pommer improved to 19-1, Ehresmann 12-1 and Jorgenson 16-3.
Area runner-ups included Tacey Miller of Webster Area (106), Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County (113), Brady Unser of Ipswich Bowdle (120), Tanner Frickson of Potter County (132), Garrett Cramer of Faulkton Area (145), Dominic Constant (182) and Justin Granum (195) of Deuel, Aiden Schoenhard of Mobridge-Pollock (220) and Lucas Rowland of Ipswich-Bowdle (285).
Faulkton Area had six place winners and Deuel five. Mobridge-Pollock, Potter County, Warner-Northwestern and Webster Area each had four; Groton Area and Ipswich-Bowdle three each and Clark-Willow Lake two. Sunshine Bible Academy and McLaughlin also competed.
The girls division, Brooke Grajczyk of Webster Area (1-0 at 132) and Kyla Logan of Doland (2-0 at 142) each placed first.
Tri-Valley Invite
LYONS — Eleven area wrestlers placed Saturday in the Tri-Valley Invite.
The group included five from Hamlin-Castlewood, four from Sisseton and two from Aberdeen Central's junior varsity.
Brody Randall (3-1 at 106) and Brock Gisselbeck (3-1 at 145) of Hamlin-Castlewood each placed second to lead area wrestlers.
Miller/Highmore-Harrold won the tourney with 172.5 points. Hamlin-Castlewood was 10th (91), Sisseton 13th (53) and Aberdeen Central's jv 14th (48.5).
Harrisburg Girls Invite
HARRISBURG — Eight area wrestlers, including three from Aberdeen Central and two from Watertown, placed in the Harrisburg Invite girls wrestling tournament on Friday.
Madyson Gillen (3-1, 113 pounds) and Katrina Gibson (3-1, 154) of Aberdeen Central and Hope Orr (3-1, 285) each recorded runner-up finishes along with Summer Guthmiller of Sioux Valley (3-1, 142) and Brooke Grajczyk of Webster Area (3-1, 132).
Autumn Gauer of Aberdeen Central was fifth (3-2) at 285, Allison Konrad of Watertown fourth (4-2) at 190 and Dani Batchelor of Clark-Willow Lake third (4-1) at 113.
Pierre won with a score of 218 in the 29-team tourney. Aberdeen Central took seventh (67) and Watertown 12th (38). Sioux Valley recorded 28.5 points, Webster Area 28, Clark-Willow Lake 20, Doland 16 and Groton Area 12.
