World Series 2022: MVP Predictions Before Phillies vs. Astros Game 6

In the aftermath of a joyous, title-winning celebration, the 2022 World Series MVP will be crowned.

Heading into Game 6 of the Fall Classic, a member of the Houston Astros is on the brink of receiving that honor. But the Philadelphia Phillies are hoping to fight back from a 3-2 series deficit and have one of their own take the memorable individual award back home.

Given that it's a potential title-clinching moment for the Astros, it's no surprise that Houston accounts for seven of the 11 players with +4000 odds or shorter. Jeremy Peña and Framber Valdez lead that bunch.

Philly, though, is two victories away from Bryce Harper or someone else snatching the award.

The obvious choice is the smart choice.

Especially if the Astros close out the series in Game 6, shortstop Jeremy Peña will be difficult to catch. He's hitting a team-high .381 and drove in two critical runs in Game 5, including a go-ahead homer that etched Peña into history as the first rookie to hit a World Series dinger.

But the closest chaser, Framber Valdez, has an opportunity to assemble a compelling case, too.

Valdez allowed one run in 6.1 innings in Game 2, helping the Astros avoid an early 0-2 hole against Philly. If he puts together a similar performance on Saturday and Peña has a quiet night, Valdez could become only the third pitcher to win MVP honors in the last 14 years.

However, the Phillies are looking to force a seventh game.

If they recover to win the series, it might become a popularity contest with a predictable ending. Although catcher J.T. Realmuto blasted the winning homer in Game 1, he's since been quiet. Star pitchers Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler both had rocky starts, too.

Bryce Harper belted a memorable two-run homer in Game 3, and basically, any amount of clutch hitting in Game 6 and a possible Game 7 would bolster his appeal.

The wild card for Philadelphia is Ranger Suárez, who spun a five-inning shutout in that Game 3 victory. He's in line to start the decisive game—if Philly can extend the series.
