Wine thru the Park to offer wine, beer and spirits tasting at Windber Recreation Park

Put on some walking shoes and enjoy the wine, brewery and distilled spirits tastings, food and shopping at Wine thru the Park, scheduled from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Windber Recreation Park, 160 Recreation Road.

Those who attend can expect food and craft vendors, live music, a basket raffle and the opportunity to sample and purchase wines, craft brews and distilled spirits offered by at least 12 different western Pennsylvania producers, including several local makers.

“We have four new wineries (coming) that we’ve never had before,” said Matt Grohal, recreation director for the Windber Borough Municipal Authority, which operates the park along Route 160.

Some of the wineries that are to attend are Greenhouse Winery from Westmoreland County, Woody Lodge Winery from Cambria County, Black Dog Wine Co. from Allegheny County and Twisted Vine Winery from McKean County. Other producers that plan to attend include Rusty Musket Distilling Co. and Forbes Trail Brewing, both from Somerset County, Excise Distillery from Cambria County and Country Hammer Moonshine from Allegheny County.

The authority has held a winter wine tasting event for several years inside the Windber Community Building. The success of that event, Grohal said, inspired a springtime tasting event to showcase Windber Recreation Park, which features a newly-renovated Grand Ballroom, several outdoor pavilions, an enclosed pavilion, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, a dog park, a walking trail, a community pool and picnic areas. The Grand Ballroom and pavilions can be rented for private parties as well.

“The wineries will be set up at the different pavilions, and people can walk through the park (for the tastings),” he said.

“We thought this would be something new, something unique. Anytime we get the chance to get people in the park, it’s a chance to let people know what we have available.”

Live entertainment, food and craft vendors, a cigar trailer and a basket raffle in the new Ray DiBattista Pavilion are also planned.

“It’s a good day to hang with family and friends and get outside,” Grohal said. “There’s a lot of different things for people to do.”

Tickets for Wine thru the Park can be purchased in advance at the EventBrite website or in person at the Windber Community Building, 1605 Graham Avenue. Tickets can also be purchased at the park on the day of the event, Grohal said. For information, call the Windber Borough Municipal Authority at 814-467-6696.

If weather conditions require a change in venue, the event would then be held in the Windber Community Building, Grohal said, and the change will be announced through their social media sites.
