The new Whataburger location in Fort Smith has opened for business.

And police reminded motorists on Monday to prepare for more traffic in the area.

"Fort Smith will welcome its new Whataburger location to the area," police stated Monday.

All traffic entering Whataburger should travel east on Phoenix Avenue in the right lane.

There will be three lanes of traffic on the property: one for dining in and two for the drive-thru.

The inner drive-thru lane will be directed back to Phoenix and should continue east on Phoenix. The outer drive-thru lane will be directed to Massard Road and then should continue south on Massard. Left turns will not be allowed for those entering or leaving the property.

In June, the city's planning commission approved rezoning property for light commercial use at 8120 Phoenix Ave. The vote was unanimous, 9-0, to recommend making way for the new Whataburger location.

The property is about 1.2 acres on the south side of Phoenix Avenue west of Massard Road. A neighborhood meeting on June 1 did not draw any neighbors who had concerns, city officials reported.
