This Westborough woman drafted a winning image for Mass. Beer Week

WESTBOROUGH If you're at a brewery or beer event during Mass. Beer Week next month, there's a good chance you'll drink your fresh IPA or dark stout from a glass containing a logo designed by Shawnna Lyons-Dambeck.

Lyons-Dambeck, 35, of Westborough, won a competition sponsored by the Mass. Brewers Guild, a trade group formed to protect the interest of and promote Bay State breweries, to design the artwork for the upcoming celebration of Massachusetts beer.

Her design will be featured on glassware available at dozens of Massachusetts breweries, and will be on promotional material for Mass. Beer Week, which runs March 4-11.

Lyons-Dambeck said her design was meant to represent the entire state, thus featuring a lighthouse and sandy shore for the coast, a skyline for Boston and farmland for the western part of the state.

"I wanted to celebrate everything about the state, not just the city, not just Boston," said Lyons-Dambeck, an artist who works mostly in textiles. "I just wanted to celebrate the whole state."

The Leominster native got interested in beer while living in Milwaukee, where she worked as an in-house artist/designer at Kohl's Corp. Before they were married, she and her husband visited breweries in the city, she said.

When she returned to Massachusetts, she worked at TJX Companies Inc. in Framingham, and began to explore the local brewery scene. She is now a freelance artist and does contract work for TJX.

"We started visiting breweries around Framingham Jack's Abby and Exhibit 'A' and then visited Redemption Rock (Brewing Company) in Worcester," she said.

It was at Redemption Rock that she found out about Mass. Beer Week, as she was served a pint in the 2021 Mass. Beer Week glass, Lyons-Dambeck said. When the competition was announced, she decided she had to enter. She bested 12 other competitors.

"It was a good challenge for myself, and I thought it was a good way to get exposure if I did win," Lyons-Dambeck said. "As an independent artist, any exposure is good."

With the win, she earned a cash prize and a case of the glassware.

The glasses themselves will be available for $6 apiece at 54 breweries throughout the state. In MetroWest, the glass will be available at Clover Road Brewing and Medusa Brewing Company, both in Hudson; Exhibit 'A' Brewing and Jack's Abby Craft Lagers, both in Framingham; Flying Dreams Brewing Company, Lost Shoes Brewing Company and Tackle Box Brewing Company, all in Marlborough; and Start Line Brewing Company in Hopkinton.

“It’s incredible to have my design be a part of a celebration that’s all about supporting local breweries,” she said. “As a local artist trying to support myself, I get the need to contribute and support local. Whenever we buy a four-pack, we make sure it’s Mass. made.”
