Walsh Jesuit advances 24 graduates from class of 2022 to college athletics

Walsh Jesuit athletic director Mark Hassman announced that 24 members of the class of 2022 have finalized their college academic and athletic plans.

Four of the 2022 WJ graduates are getting ready to play on a collegiate women’s soccer team: Kennedy Alberty at Miami of Ohio, Margaret Brown at Duquesne, Allie Drake at St. Bonaventure and Maggie Krosky at Ohio Dominican.

Alberty, Brown, Drake and Krosky helped WJ finish as a Division I state runner-up in girls soccer last season.

Six of the 24 graduates are set to play football in college: Jack Romanini, Kasey Kish and Joey DeAngelis at John Carroll; Bryan Blackwell and LeShon Crenshaw at Charleston; and Christian Ochei at Notre Dame College in Ohio.

WJ’s football team advanced to a Division II regional final last season. Kish, Ochei and Romanini earned All-Ohio honors in Division II.

Five WJ baseball players are set to play in college after helping the team advance to a Division I regional final in 2022 after being a state semifinalist in 2021. The five players are Henry Kaczmar (Ohio State), Will Harding (Holy Cross), Andrew Gormley (Charleston), Tyler Barni (Youngstown State) and Logan Oakes (Gannon).

Kaczmar earned Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Ohio honors in Division I as a senior after batting .357 with 35 hits in 98 at bats, five home runs, three doubles, one triple, 29 RBIs, 29 runs scored and 13 stolen bases.

Kaczmar also earned first team All-Ohio honors in Division I as a junior when he compiled a .568 batting average with 54 hits in 95 at-bats, scored 46 runs, had 42 RBIs, stole nine bases and hit four home runs, two triples and a single-season school record 18 doubles.

All-Ohio selection Luke Ondracek is set to continue his running career at Georgetown University on the Hoyas cross country and track and field teams.

Ondracek finished his senior cross country season fourth at the Division I state meet in a time of 15:18.0 at Fortress Obetz. He started the postseason by winning a district championship and taking third in a regional meet. Ondracek competed in the state cross country meet three times, earned Academic All-Ohio Academic team honors and was invited to participate in the Mideast Cross Country Championships.

All-Ohio tennis player Caleb Miller has accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy to continue his academic and athletic careers.

Miller compiled a 29-5 record in singles matches in 2022. He finished his career at WJ with a 62-16 singles record and a 20-3 doubles record. Miller and 2021 WJ graduate Ben Cors finished third in the Division I state doubles tournament.

The other Walsh graduates committed to an athletic team are Brooke Norris (volleyball, Hiram); Sam Richardson (volleyball, Wittenberg); Avery Sloan (volleyball, Transylvania); Colette Sutton (basketball, Westminster); Nolan Frye (wrestling, Ohio); Dewey Black (swimming, Ashland); and Olin Frank (track and field, Massachusetts).
