UIL soccer playoffs bi-district recap: Burges girls upset Del Valle in bidistrict round
The UIL soccer playoffs have started across the state with bi-district games. Here is a look at how teams from El Paso fared.
Saturday
Class 5A Boys
* Bel Air defeated Burges, 1-0, at Burges High School. Ruben Esparza headed in a goal in the first half for the Highlanders, who were the No. 4 seed out of District 2-5A. Burges was the District 1-5A champion.
"We played well and it was a good win," Esparza said. "It was a team win and everyone stepped up."
Added senior midfielder/defender Hector Prieto: "We have been working hard for this. We came out focused and we knew we had to play at a high level against a good Burges team."
Friday
Class 4A boys
* San Elizario defeated Canyon, 5-0. Alan Jurado and Josue Flores each scored two goals for the Eagles and Sebastian Gutierrez scored one.
* Riverside edged Borger, 4-3. Jonathan Reyes scored all four goals for the Rangers.
* Pampa defeated Mountain View, 3-1.
* Clint defeated Dumas 3-0 in penalty kicks.
Class 4A Girls
* San Elizario defeated Borger, 8-1
* Riverside lost 5-0 to Dumas
* Canyon defeated Clint, 7-0
Class 5A Boys
* Irvin defeated Canutillo 4-2 in penalty kicks after the two teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtimes.
Class 5A Girls
* Canutillo defeated Jefferson, 3-1. Anissa Mendez, Margui Nieves and Vanessa Preciado each scored goals for Canutillo.
Class 6A Boys
* Eastlake defeated Odessa Permian, 5-2. Bryan Aguirre scored three goals to lead the Falcons. Jordan Widner and Gael Barragan each added a goal for the Falcons.
* Pebble Hills defeated Midland Legacy, 1-0. Jose Luis Villagomez scored the lone goal for the Spartans.
* After a 4-4 tie after regulation and two overtime periods, Socorro defeated Wolfforth Frenship 3-1 in penalty kicks to advance to the area round. Yahir Meza, Yahir Martinez and Armando Lomas scored goals for the Bulldogs. Goalkeeper Irvin Bouche stopped three shots in the penalty kick phase to help seal the win.
* Odessa High defeated Franklin, 4-1. Carlos Moreno scored Franklin's lone goal.
Class 6A Girls
* Franklin defeated Midland High, 2-1. The Cougars scored two first half goals and never trailed. Grace Washburn and Sydney Varela scored goals for the Cougars.
"This season has gone well for us," Washburn said. "As the season has gone on, we've improved and worked hard. There was some adjustment to a new coach, but once we settled in we were fine."
Thursday
Class 5A Girls
* The Burges girls won three games last season and were the No. 4 seed from District 1-5A this year on the road at Del Valle, which was the No. 1 seed out of District 2-5A.
But the Mustangs' defense held tough and kept the Conquistadores scoreless through regulation and two overtime periods. Then in the penalty kick phase, the Mustangs outscored the Conquistadores 4-2 to advance to the area round. Burges goalkeeper Ashley Zaragoza had two huge saves in the penalty kick part of the game and Pamela Ramirez scored the game-winning penalty to help lead the Mustangs.
"I wasn't supposed to kick a penalty kick but coach (Arnold Ceniceros) believed in me and encouraged me to do it," Ramirez said. "This win means a lot to me and our team. We have worked so hard for this moment."
Added Zaragoza: "An amazing win for us. I was nervous there at the end but I knew I had to step up and our team believed it could win."
* Bel Air defeated Andress, 3-2. Nicole Morales, Joseline Flores and Laysha Contreras each scored goals for the Highlanders, who defeated the Eagles for the second straight year.
* El Paso High defeated El Dorado, 5-1. Tessa O'Neill scored three goals, Ela Aldrete scored once and Zeltzin Rodriguez scored one for the Tigers.
Class 5A boys
* Del Valle defeated El Paso High, 1-0, behind a first half goal from Emiliano Salazar. The Conquistadores, who reached the Final Four last season, will play Monday or Tuesday in the area round.
"It was a tough game, El Paso High played a great match," Del Valle coach Bruce Reichman said. "We did some good things. We still have to get better with our conditioning and we have some things we can improve on, but it was a good win.
* El Dorado defeated Andress, 2-0. Jose Luis Enriquez, Jr. and Zaid Diaz scored goals for the Aztecs.
Class 6A girls
* Americas lost 4-2 to Odessa Permian. Kaitlyn Olivas and Jayde Gone scored goals for the Trailblazers.
* Eastlake lost 4-0 to San Angelo Central.
* Eastwood lost 3-0 to Frenship.
