UIL Girls Basketball Playoffs: Eastwood uses big fourth quarter to win bi-district title

The bidistrict round of the UIL girls basketball playoffs continued Tuesday night for teams across the state. Here is a look at how El Paso teams fared.

Class 6A

In a defensive struggle, Eastwood found some offense late to defeat Midland Legacy, 31-20, at Eastwood High School.

The Troopers led 16-15 after three quarters but scored 15 points in the final quarter due in large part to freshmen Victoria Duran and Abigail Ortega. Duran scored six points and Ortega scored four points and had a key blocked shot to lead the way.

Duran hit a 3-pointer early in the game and Ortega added a rebound follow for the Troopers, who led 14-10 at halftime.

Eastwood, which finished second in District 1-6A, advances to meet Southlake Carroll in the area round later this week. Midland Legacy was the No. 3 seed out of District 2-6A.

"We just kept playing, kept fighting hard," Duran said. "Both of us had an opportunity to step up and make some plays and we were able to. It's a great feeling to win this bi-district title. We wanted to do this for the seniors, they have been great leaders for us."

Added Ortega: "It's been a learning process for us all season long as freshmen, we've learned so much, we've come a long way as players and as a team. To win this game was big for our program."

Eastwood joined Pebble Hills and Franklin from District 1-6A as bidistrict champions this season.

Class 5A

Andress advanced to area with a 39-34 road win against Hanks. Leslie Mojica led Andress with nine points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists and Allenae Martin-Lewis scored 13 points. Daisy Fernandez scored 13 points and Elise Alva scored eight points to help lead the Knights. Andress has won nine straight bidistrict titles.

Class 4A

  • Clint is moving on after a 55-16 win against Austin. Jocelyn Castro led the Lions with 21 points and Aylin Garcia scored. The Lions play Canyon on Thursday.

  • Irvin defeated San Elizario, 46-36, behind 22 points from Hannah Jones and 13 points from Meia Rocha. Audrey Hernandez led the Eagles with 24 points. .

  • Mountain View defeated Bowie, 36-18. Tiara Trujillo and Ximena Delgado each scored 10 points for the Lobos.
