For two days only, dog adoptions are free at Stanislaus Animal Services shelter

Dogs of all ages, sizes and dispositions will be free to adopt from the Stanislaus Animal Services Agency, but only for a two-day period.

Local entrepreneur Kelsie Costa has pledged to donate up to $10,000, which covers all fees — spay/neuter, licensing, vaccinations and microchipping — for up to 100 dogs.

The Spring Cleaning Adoption Event will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the shelter, 3647 Cornucopia Way in Modesto.

The event is intended to ease overcrowding at the shelter, which has 244 dogs but just 188 kennels.

“California is currently experiencing a drastic increase in dog abandonment, leading to overcrowding at SASA,” according to a press release from the agency. “As a result, many of our wonderful dogs have been living in the shelter for up to 60 days, and our typical adoption rate of only a few dogs per day is not enough to keep up with the influx of new arrivals.”

Executive Director Vaughn Maurice said experts have found that after 30 days in a shelter, some dogs start to regress mentally and develop behavioral issues.

He said there was a big rise in pet adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic but more people are now giving up or abandoning pets, partially due to inflation.
