TWD: Daryl Dixon Recap: Laurent’s Horrifying Backstory Revealed

Even as the second episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon reveals more about Laurent and Isabelle’s harrowing history, it sets the stage for a future that seems destined to be sadder still.

In flashbacks to the night that Parisians began turning into walkers — and how cool was that whole sequence! — we see Isabelle as she was, a party-girl pickpocket caring for sister Lily. After Isa is rescued by apparent significant other Quinn, the two of them grab Lily and get the hell out of Dodge.

There’s just one slight problem. Well, aside from the outbreak of walkers. Lily has been keeping from her older sibling that she is pregnant — for seven months! When Quinn insists to Isa that they drop Lily off at a hospital and continue on to their remote destination without her, the future nun steals his car keys and speeds away with her sister.

As Lily’s contractions intensify, she and Isa seek refuge at the Abbey of St. Bernadette, where the mom-to-be discovers that a close encounter with a walker has left her with a bite mark. “Promise me you’ll look after my baby,” she begs her sister — and scarcely a moment too soon, either. Lily dies in labor and turns; only then does Laurent make his miraculous entry into the world.

‘MONSIEUR DARYL, WHAT KIND OF DEATH WOULD YOU PREFER?’ | In the present, Daryl, Isabelle, Laurent and Sylvie make the acquaintance of a group of youngsters holed up in a preschool. Since our main characters are short a mule, Daryl takes on the kids’ bogeyman, a nasty hoarder named RJ Gaines, in order to score a replacement horse. (The epitome of the ugly American, RJ meets a grisly end hanging from his drawbridge like a carrot above his moat full of walkers.)

At episode’s end, Laurent — having learned from the children that the story he’d always been told about his heroic late father was actually The Count of Monte Cristo — wants nothing to do with Isabelle. So Daryl steps in to be the disillusioned-kid whisperer. Meanwhile, back at the abbey, Codron sees Pere Jean’s wall map of his planned route to Le Havre. Now Genet’s goon knows where to hunt down our heroes.
