Turpin High School names Connor Roberts as its next head boys basketball coach

Turpin High School named Connor Roberts its next head boys basketball coach on Tuesday night, pending school board approval May 17, according to athletic director Tony Hemmelgarn.

Roberts heads to Turpin after just one season at Talawanda, his alma mater. In his one season with the Braves, Roberts completed a worst-to-first turnaround, leading Talawanda to a share of the Southwest Ohio Conference title (15-8) one season after the team finished last in the league (6-16).

Roberts, 26, was named the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association Coach of the Year, the Southwest District's Division I Co-Coach of the Year and the SWOC Coach of the Year.

"We are very excited to welcome Connor (Roberts) to our team," Hemmelgarn said in a statement. "He is a rising star in the profession and people all over the city have spoken about his smarts, work ethic, passion for the game and ability to get the most out of kids. I have no doubt that he is the right person to lead us into the future."

Before the one-year stint at Talawanda, Roberts was on the Edgewood boys basketball varsity staff for three seasons and spent time with D.J. Wyrick's Fairfield Indians from 2020-2022.

"I understand the tradition and expectations of Turpin basketball and I thrive under an environment that's demanding of excellence," Roberts said in a press release. "Turpin has accomplished great things as a program and I'm excited to help our kids maximize their full potential and reach their goals as a premier program in the ECC and Greater Cincinnati. I can't wait to meet the guys."

Roberts replaces Josh Slonim, who stepped down in April to continue building his Commercial Real Estate business, according to a press release. Turpin finished 17-6 last season and won a share of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.
