TJ DeAngelis named president of Chippewa school board, new strategic plan approved

DOYLESTOWN - T.J. DeAngelis was voted president of the Chippewa Local Schools Board of Education Monday evening, and other board appointments were made.

After the organizational meeting, the superintendent gave a presentation on the next steps in the district's strategic plan, which was then approved by the board.

After being nominated by board member Linda Fenn, DeAngelis was chosen unanimously as board president. He was re-elected in November and has served as both the vice president and president of the board in previous terms.

“I’m excited to get on things,” DeAngelis said. “And I think we got a couple of good new people that are invested to do a great job for us.”

In the coming year, DeAngelis said he is looking forward to working with his fellow board members on executing the district’s strategic plan.

Fenn was elected vice president and previously served as president until her term ended in December.

Board member Jeremy Golub was appointed legislative liaison to the Ohio State Bar Association. In this position, Golub said he will keep the board informed of any legislation changes coming from the state.

Jay Hershberger was named the board's representative to the village of Doylestown for the economic/development committee and will serve as a liaison between the board and village.

Strategic plan reviewed, shared by board

Superintendent Todd Osborn gave a presentation on the district's strategic plan, touching on topics such as communication, finances and academic achievements.

Osborn said the plan, which was being picked back up after some changes due to the pandemic, was created with the help of staff, administrators and community members through a survey that was filled out.

With the data, Osborn said, goals were outlined, including:

  • Communication and community integration

  • Facilities/safety and security

  • Climate, culture and wellness

  • Finance

  • Academic achievement

  • Business operations/human resources

The plan was unanimously approved by the board and will start up immediately. A copy of Osborn's presentation can be found on the district’s website and at local libraries.

OTHER BUSINESS

  • Hershberger brought up concerns about the timing of the district spring break week not lining up with that of other local schools. He said he is concerned some students might not get a spring break due to classes they take through the Wayne County Schools Career Center. Osborn said each school calendar is voted on years in advance, and said he would speak with teacher union representatives about possibly changing the dates of future spring breaks. No changes were made to the spring break schedule for the 2021-22 school year.

  • Brad Bertsch was approved as a building maintenance supervisor and Robin Coffee was approved as the new transportation supervisor. Both Bertsch and Coffee will serve in their respective roles through July 31, 2024.

  • The board approved the purchase of 50 Chromebooks through Trafera, using $16,050 in grant money. During the November meeting, the board approved the purchase of 57 Chromebooks, also through Trafera, for $18,753.
