'It's a time to connect': Districtwide art shows aims to unite Hingham students

HINGHAM – Paintings, drawings, photos, pottery and other types of art will be on display later this month as Hingham's talented students of all ages show off their work at a districtwide art show.

Hingham Fine Arts Director Joann Bellis said she aims to make community connections with the show and to link the younger artists with older ones. Bellis said her work is focused on "bringing joy back into the schools."

Students from Foster Elementary School in Hingham learned about the work of artist Bisa Butler and then worked to show their own identity by modeling her artistic techniques. Their work will be on display at an art show Thursday, April 27, 2023.

"The districtwide art show is an initiative to show our younger students the vision for our program. We're hoping that if you're a kindergartner and you go to the art show, you will see high school work that will inspire you to continue on with the program," Bellis said.

Hingham schools will host the K-12 Art Show and the Advanced Art Show from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the Hingham High cafeteria. An exhibit of advanced student work will be displayed in Room 103 during school hours from Monday, April 24, through Thursday, April 27.

Bellis said a variety of skills and styles will be featured in both shows. There will be graphic art, 3D ceramic sculptures and panels with 2D art. The artwork will be grouped by grade level and projects, and Bellis said when visitors walk through the exhibit they'll see what kinds of classic and modern techniques students are learning in class. High school students will host a pottery demonstration on spinning wheels.

"I see a lot of families connecting at the art show who didn't know that maybe their friends had their child's artwork in the show as well," she said. "People run into each other, they will stay and chat. It's a good time to connect."
