Some severe thunderstorms were rumbling through the Kansas City metro area Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service warned residents of the chance of hazardous weather, including thunderstorms in the northwest, north central and west central Missouri, as well as eastern Kansas, according to the website.

The storms could cause heavy rain and the ponding of water on roads. Between a half and three quarters of an inch of rainfall were expected, the service said.

Drivers should proceed carefully on roads as weather conditions continue for the next few hours, the service said in an online post.

More thunderstorms may blow through the metro between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, the service said.

Strong to severe thunderstorms may also be possible Saturday evening. Rain showers and more thunderstorms were predicted for Sunday, although no severe weather is expected then.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is made available.
