Thousands remain without power in Memphis nearly two days after severe storms

At least 9,872 customers are without power in the Memphis area the second morning after severe storms hit the city.

Power restoration should be complete by Monday, Memphis Light, Gas and Water said Saturday evening.

The line of storms came through Memphis overnight between Friday and Saturday, as others in a stretch from Arkansas to Kentucky faced severe winds and potential record-breaking tornado damage, killing dozens. In Memphis, storms caused some structure damage and filled roads with downed trees and debris.

One person in Shelby County died due to the storm, one of four fatalities across the state, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency reported late Saturday.

MLGW has appeared to restore power for about 80% of all customers who lost power due to the storm.

The utility reported Saturday that at worst, outages from the storm left 54,518 customers without power. Most of the outages occurred when fallen trees and limbs took down power lines and poles, MLGW said.

Sunday morning, 276 outages were in the way of returning power for the 10,000 customers, per the map. Outages remained concentrated in Orange Mound, Grahamwood, Binghampton, the University of Memphis area and South Memphis, a stretch marked by an east-west path along South Parkway and Park Avenue and north-south on Highland Street.

People can report outages to MLGW at 901-544-6500.

Emergencies, such as downed wires and gas leaks, can be reported to the utility at 901-528-4465, a number the utility requests be treated like calls to 911.
