Led by district singles champion Tess Bucher, the North Canton Hoover girls tennis team will send a program-record five players to next week’s Division I state tournament in Mason.

Bucher and the Vikings doubles team of senior Cecilia Holben and junior Bridget Fink already had secured their spots during Thursday’s opening two rounds of the district tournament at Springside Athletic Club. Hoover’s doubles team of seniors Claire Wood and Angelina Koinoglou joined the party during Saturday’s action, advancing to the fifth-place match out of the consolation bracket to ensure their spot next weekend.

The top six singles players and top six doubles teams out of Springside qualified for the state tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center near Cincinnati.

The five Hoover players will join four from Jackson in Mason next weekend. The Polar Bears doubles teams of seniors Madison Altman and Paige Reese, along with junior Addyson Utterback and senior Divya Shanmugam had punched their tickets on Thursday by advancing to the semifinals.

Altman and Reese – headed to state for a fourth straight year – finished second in the district Saturday after beating Holben and Fink 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals, then losing to Magnificat’s Caroline Moritz and Anna Mancino 7-5, 6-3 in the championship match. Holben and Fink rebounded to beat Utterback and Shanmugam 6-2, 6-4 for third place. Utterback and Shanmugam had lost to Moritz and Mancino 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals.

Bucher earned her second straight district championship after finishing as runner-up as a freshman. She beat Avon junior Natalie Smitek 6-2, 6-3 in Saturday's semifinal, then bested Magnificat freshman Anna Bennett by the same score in the final. Bucher has finished fourth at state each of the past two seasons.
