Tennessee State football's Joe "747" Adams misses out again on Black College Football HOF enshrinement

For the second consecutive year former Tennessee State quarterback Joe "747" Adams did not make the final cut for the Black College Football Hall of Fame.

The 2022 class was announced Tuesday and Adams nor former Tigers defensive back Jim Marsalis, who also was a finalist, were included.

The class includes Ben Coates (tight end Livingstone), Donald Driver (wide receiver, Alcorn State), John “Big Train” Moody (running back, Morris Brown), Roscoe Nance (contributor, Tuskegee), Nate Newton (offensive line, Florida A&M), Billy Nicks (coach, Morris Brown and Prairie View A&M) and Sammy White (wide receiver, Grambling State).

Adams' career record as a starter was 25-7. He threw for a school school-record 30 touchdowns as a senior in 1980 and his 8,653 career passing yards is second on the school's list.

He went on to play in the Canadian Football League.

This was Marsalis' first year as a finalist. He was a Sporting News All-American at TSU who set the interceptions record in the 1968 Blue-Gray game with three.

He was selected in the first round (23rd pick) of the 1969 NFL Draft and played a total of nine seasons in the NFL.

TSU players already in the hall of fame include Joe Gilliam Jr., Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Richard Dent, Claude Humphrey and Eldridge Dickey along with coach John Merritt.
