Teniya Morant, younger sister of Ja Morant, commits to Mississippi Valley State basketball

The path for Teniya Morant to playing Division I basketball is similar to that of her older brother and Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant.

Both were overlooked and underrecruited. Ja's collegiate path took him to stardom at Murray State, which has become a regular competitor in the NCAA Tournament.

Teniya Morant's path is taking her to Mississippi Valley State University. She announced her commitment to MVSU late Wednesday night, via her Instagram page. Teniya recently graduated from Houston High School.

"Obviously excited for her," said Houston girls basketball coach, Justin Lewis. "... They’re getting a good player. "

Mississippi Valley State was Morant's first Division I basketball offer in late January. She also received interest from Grambling State.

This past season, Morant, a 5-foot-3 point guard, was the second-leading scorer for Houston, averaging 11.7 points per game. She also averaged 4.7 rebounds per game.

The Mustangs' season ended in the region quarterfinals with a loss to Whitehaven, 50-29.

"They’re getting a tenacious player that gives it her all on the floor," Lewis said. "Somebody that’s going to be vocal. She’s going to work hard."

Ja Morant has been in headlines this week following an Instagram Live video that appeared to show him brandishing a gun, which went viral Sunday morning. Morant was suspended from all Memphis Grizzlies team activities and the NBA is conducting an investigation into the incident.

This is the second time in about 10 weeks that Morant has appeared to flash a gun during a social media video. He was suspended eight games by the NBA after the first incident.
