Takeaways from Deion Sanders’ first update of fall camp

Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders spoke to the media on Friday following the Buffs’ third practice of fall camp and overall, he really didn’t have anything negative to share about what he has seen so far.

Considering that Sanders isn’t the type of coach to sugarcoat much, his optimistic camp update was especially encouraging to hear. Fall camp has obviously just begun, but the new-look Buffs appear to be meshing well together on and off the field with less than 30 days until their preparation is tested against TCU.

Below are five takeaways from Coach Prime’s first update of fall camp:

“I love going into practice each day and witnessing the battles that we have at certain positions,” Sanders said. “You’re seeing battles (at) offensive line, defensive line, defensive backs, corners, kickers. It’s unbelievable.”

While Sanders didn’t give specific updates on which players are winning those position battles, he did praise Colorado’s depth across the board.

“Even the guys we brought in the spring, the unity that they’re displaying, as well as the unity that the other guys that have come in the summer, it’s unbelievable,” Sanders said. “You got to see them at lunch, breakfast, dinner, just around the complex and all around town. These guys are really solid and they’re really unified. They know what the common goal and that’s to win, and they want to go pro.”

“I know what I want to see, I know what I like, I know these kids, I have relationships with them and I know what it should look like,” Sanders said. “I’ve been in a multitude of levels, played for a multiplicity of coaches and I know what I want. So those guys (defensive coordinator Charles Kelly and offensive coordinator Sean Lewis) have done a wonderful job of being who they are, but also just playing to the strengths of our team.”

“I want you to see the display of receivers that we saw out there today,” Sanders said. “It is un-darn-believable. There’s not a receiver on the starting unit right now that can’t take that thing 80-85 yards and hit their head on the goalpost.”

“I think he’s put on 12-15 pounds,” Sanders said. “He’s a dog, he wants all the smoke, he wants the ball. He’s not just a bounce guy that bounces outside; he can run between the tackles. Dylan Edwards is a phenomenal, electrifying player. We plan on having him returning kicks as well as getting the ball to him as much as possible.”
