Sturgis, Colon boys win on Friday night

Sturgis went on the road Friday and beat Vicksburg 46-28.

The victory improves Sturgis’ mark to 1-1 on the season after a loss to New Buffalo earlier in the week.

“We played well tonight, it was a much better effort on the defensive end and I thought we dominated the boards tonight,” Sturgis coach Keith Kurowski said. “We took care of the ball, too. The defense was big for us. This was a good bounceback win for us tonight.”

The Trojans won the rock fight of a first quarter, posting an 11-7 edge after eight minutes.

In the second, Sturgis’ 15 points were the most from either team in a quarter. Jacob Thompson posted five points, JJ Stevens connected for eight and Sturgis led 26-14 at the break.

Sturgis struggled a bit in the third quarter from the floor, scoring only eight points. Vicksburg posted nine points, but Sturgis led 34-23 entering the fourth.

In that final quarter, the Sturgis defense allowed just two made field goals for Vicksburg.

Stevens led all scorers with 21 points, Thompson tossed in 19 while Hayden Goodman made six points.

Sturgis was just 9-of-20 from the foul line, but Vicksburg made just 1-of-5.

In the junior varsity game, Sturgis dropped a 64-48 decision.

Grady Miller led with 15 points, Gibson Cary scored 14 points while Tyler Sikorski tossed in 10 points. Gavin PeDue scored five points. Both Brandin Kelley and Jackson Garman scored two points.

Colon 46, Sand Creek 36

The Colon Magi won a third straight game to start the season on Friday, beating Sand Creek 46-36.

The Magi posted double digit points in all four quarters. They scored 11 in each of the first two and led 22-15 at halftime. A 34-22 edge entering the fourth quarter allowed Colon to hang on for the win.

Simon Vinson posted 16 points, Justin Wickey added 12 while Josh West connected for nine points. Tucker Lafler tossed in six points, Kaleb Johnson added two while Alex Stoll made a free throw.

Plainwell 63, Three Rivers 56

The Three Rivers boys dropped a 63-56 decision to Plainwell on Friday night.

The Trojans led 13-12 after one, but Three Rivers battled back to lead 30-29 at halftime.

“The first quarter, we had several turnovers that cost us to be down,” Three Rivers coach Brian Burg said. “In the second quarter, we did a better job of executing our offense and got some stops to give us the lead.”

Plainwell would end the first half on a 5-0 run and then out-scored Three Rivers 22-10 in the third quarter. Three Rivers was able to cut it to a 51-48 deficit with 5:30 remaining in the game, but Plainwell was able to hang on for the win.

Connor Quake led Three Rivers with 14 points, he connected for four triples.

Andrew Brown added 12 points, Caleb Quake had 12 points as well. Angelo Hausmanis tossed in 10 points with eight rebounds and four assists, Garron Gahan scored four points with four rebounds, Chase Evans and Lamonta Stone each had two points.
