STARS OF THE DAY: Track hardware handed out; Portsmouth's Ruggieri tosses no-hitter
Cam Ruggieri, Portsmouth baseball
The freshman hurler pitched a no-hitter, struck out six, walked one, hit a batter and faced just 24 hitters over seven innings as the host Patriots snapped a three-game losing skid with a 5-0 win over Barrington on Sunday.
Jessie Russell and Corinne Pelletier, Rogers girls track
Russell won the javelin with a toss of 100 feet, 8 inches, and Pelletier was runner-up in the hammer (112-8) and placed fourth in the shot put (28-5 ½) for Rogers, which finished in fifth place out of 11 teams at the Eastern Division championships Sunday in Portsmouth.
Katelin Cruikshank, Middletown girls track
Cruikshank earned all of Middletown’s four team points as she placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 7 inches at the Eastern Division championships Sunday in Portsmouth.
Katie Richardson and Sam Gacioch, Tiverton girls track
Richardson took second in the javelin with a throw of 97 feet, 4 inches, while Gacioch finished third in the discus with a heave of 83-5 as the Tigers placed ninth in the Eastern Division championships Sunday in Portsmouth.
Elly Skeels and Katie Spaner, Portsmouth girls track
Skeels was runner-up in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.22 seconds, placed second in the 400 (1:02), finished fifth in the 200 (27.87) and teamed with Kitty Damon, Marin Goodfriend and Addison Mau to win the 4x400 relay at the Eastern Division championship meet Sunday on her home track.
Spaner won the triple jump with a bound of 32 feet, 1 inch, placed third in the 100 hurdles (18.0) and fifth in the long jump (15-3) as the host Patriots finished as runners-up to Barrington in the point total.
Luis Bettencourt and Kordell O’Brien-Tate Rogers boys track
Bettencourt placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.13 seconds, was runner-up in the triple jump with a bound of 38 feet, 7¼ inches, finished third in the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.47) and fourth in the long jump (19-8) for the Vikings at the Eastern Division championship meet in Portsmouth.
Tate-O’Brien won the pole vault (10-6) and was a member of a pair of scoring relays teams to help Rogers score a third-place team finish.
Jason Hayes and Will Chisolm, Middletown boys track
Hayes won the shot put with a heave of 43 feet, 11¼ inches and the discus (160-6), while Chisolm finished fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 44:04 seconds. They combined to earn all of the Islanders' points in a seventh-place finish Sunday in the Eastern Division championship in Portsmouth.
Carlin Phillips and Josh Wood, Tiverton boys track
Phillips took sixth in the long jump with an effort of 19 feet, 4 inches, and Wood finished sixth in the hammer (166-1) to account for Tiverton’s points Sunday in the Eastern Division championship meet in Portsmouth.
Jeff Brady and Colby Fahrney, Portsmouth boys track
Brady finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.97 seconds, was runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches, placed third in the triple jump (38-1) and was a member of the second-place 4x400 relay team for host Portsmouth, which took second as a team at the Eastern Division championship meet.
Fahrney placed second in the 200 (23.26), second in the long jump (21-9 ½), third in the 100 dash (11.44) and was on a scoring relay quartet for the Patriots, who tallied 122.3 points compared to 196.6 for the Eagles.
Saturday's stars
Gigi Shaver and Ginnie Hamilton, Middletown girls lacrosse
Shaver paced the offense with five goals, and Hamilton registered three goals and two assists for the Islanders in their 19-13 win over North Kingstown on Saturday.
"Tough to pick an individual star because the offensive unit worked so well together," said Middletown Blair Anderson, whose team received either a goal or an assist from seven players. "
The Islanders improved to 4-5 in Division I with the victory.

Mello whacked two of his team's four total hits as the Islanders bowed to host South Kingstown 10-1 on Saturday
Friday's stars
Keaton O’Shea and Christian Berluti
O’Shea scored four goals and Berluti made 10 saves as the host Islanders fell to Portsmouth 12-6 on Friday night.
Jack Cianciolo and Marcus Evans
Cianciolo netted three goals and assisted on two others, and Evans controlled the faceoffs, scored two goals and had one assist as the visiting Patriots took down Middletown 12-6 on Friday night.
Jason Potvin, Tiverton baseball
Potvin allowed four earned runs and eight hits while striking out nine in a complete-game effort, and he had one of the host Tigers, two base hits as Tiverton fell to Johnston 5-0 on Friday.
Robby Dufault, Rogers baseball
Dufault pitched into the sixth inning in an eventual 6-4 loss to Narragansett on Friday at Cardines Field. He scattered nine hits, struck out three and walked two. At the plate, Dufault helped his cause with a two-run single.
Alex Stanfield, Portsmouth boys tennis
The Patriots dropped a 6-1 decision to Cumberland on Friday, with Stanfield being one of the bright spots. He gained a 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 victory for the team's lone point.
Thursday's stars
John Mass, Portsmouth baseball
Mass took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and had to settle for a three-hitter in a complete-game effort that included seven strikeouts. But host Portsmouth managed just three hits and stranded seven runners in dropping its third straight game, a 1-0 setback to South Kingstown on Thursday.

Jacob Mello, Middletown baseball
Mello had a single, Middletown’s lone hit of the game, and the Islanders made three errors that led to eight unearned runs in a 10-0, five-inning setback to La Salle on Thursday in Providence.
Chase Arment and Patrick Stahl, Rogers boys lacrosse
Arment notched two goals and assisted on three others, and goalie Stahl made 19 saves for the Vikings, who bowed to Cranston West 11-7 at Toppa Field on Thursday.

Grace Boneu and Nora Cooney, Portsmouth girls lacrosse
Boneu ripped home four goals and had five assists, and Cooney came through with two goals and three assists as the Patriots rolled past Mount Hope 17-3 on Thursday in Bristol.

The Middletown resident continued to dominate Division I batters as he pitched five innings and struck out 13 batters as the Hawks defeated Pilgrim 9-1 on Thursday in Warwick.
Garen Seibert and Gio Perrotti, Portsmouth tennis
The Patriots' No. 2 doubles tandem went the distance with their foes before bowing 6-2, 6-7 (9), 10-7 in the most competitive match of the day as the host Patriots fell to Prout 7-0.
Connor Hole-Young and David Rivera, Rogers junior varsity boys lacrosse
The two attack men combined to score all the goals as the host Vikings beat Cranston West 4-3 on Thursday.
Wednesday's stars
Grace Plourde and Abby DeMello, Tiverton softball
Plourde cracked a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning to go along with her two base hits, and relief pitcher DeMello set down all nine batters she faced to earn the pitching win as the Tigers rallied to beat Portsmouth 10-6 on Wednesday.
Karissa Dupuis, Middletown softball
Dupuis pitched a four-hitter and struck out 14 and was one of four Middletown players to have a base hit as the Islanders fell to host Westerly 2-1 on Wednesday.
Louie Murphy and Meghan Mureddu, Rogers golf
Murphy earned medalist honors as he shot a 41 at Crestwood Country Club on Wednesday, and Mureddu was right behind with a 42 as the Vikings defeated Bay View 192-217 and bowed to Middletown 180-192.

Fin Clark, Middletown tennis
Clark overcame a first-set loss at No. 2 singles to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 and earn the Islanders' match-clinching point win a 4-3 triumph over Portsmouth on Wednesday.
“He showed a lot of heart,” Middletown coach Eric Wright said. “It is exactly what you want to see out of your captain. He is not the most vocal player, but he leaves it all out there every match. He came through when we needed him most.”
Ella Daly, Portsmouth softball
Daly swatted a pair of solo home runs, one leading off the second inning and the other coming with two outs in the third, but that wasn't enough as Portsmouth bowed to host Tiverton 10-6 on Wednesday.
“The last half of the season I’ve been hitting pretty well. Other than that it kind of came out of nowhere,” Daly said.
Connor Nobrega, Toby Harrison and Ben Sowa, Tiverton tennis
Nobrega, who began the season playing doubles but eventually moved into the No. 4 singles position, scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while the top doubles team of Harrison and Sowa came through with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph as the host Tigers downed Classical 7-0 on Wednesday.
“Nobrega played an excellent match using a strong serve and strong net play,” Tiverton coach Bill Phillips said. “Connor played his best match of the year so far. Toby Harrison and Ben Sowa played their best match of the season. Strong serving and excellent return of serve got them the straight-set win.”
Oliver Rey and Luc Lavigueur, Rogers baseball
Rey pitched a complete game, allowed six earned runs and struck out seven while Lavigueur went 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and three RBIs as Rogers bowed to host Johnston 7-5 on Wednesday.
“Oliver battled for us all day. He had great control of his pitches. With three games this week and four next he really helped out our staff,” Rogers coach Anthony Borgueta said. “Luc continues to be our leader. He’s really worked hard on his hitting and it shows. He is really in a good place at the plate. It’s fun to watch.”
Digby Alexander and Nick Phelan, Middletown golf
Playing from the No. 1 slot, Alexander shot a 42, and Phelan came through with a 45 from the No. 6 position. They helped the Islanders defeat Rogers 180-192 and Bay View 180-217 at Crestwood Country Club on Wednesday.
Henry White and Alex Stansfield, Portsmouth tennis
White came through with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles on Wednesday, and Stansfield earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles, but the Patriots managed to win just one more match as they were edged by visiting Middletown 4-3.
Kamdyn Rego and Jon Garde, Tiverton baseball
Rego cracked a double and two singles, scored two runs and drove home two, while starting pitcher Garde got into the fifth inning, allowed two unearned runs and struck out three. The Tigers scored eight runs in the seventh inning to break open a close game and downed host Exeter-West Greenwich 12-2 on Wednesday for their fifth consecutive win.
Joe Nardolillo, Portsmouth golf
Nardolillo fired a 41 at Agawam Hunt Golf Club as the Patriots took down East Providence 187-191 and bowed to unbeaten Barrington 160-187 on Wednesday. The Patriots' Eastern Division record settled at 7-2.
Tuesday's stars
Noah Leys, Middletown baseball
Leys swatted two of the three Middletown hits and knocked in the Islanders lone run as visiting La Salle took down the locals 8-1 on Tuesday at Gaudet Middle School.
Tony Marcucci and Jack Cianciolo, Portsmouth boys lacrosse
Marcucci scored a career-high four goals and had two assists, and Cianciolo registered a hat trick and three assists for the host Patriots, who defeated Hendricken 11-7 on Tuesday night.

Murphy and Mureddu tied for team-best honors and the fourth lowest overall score as each shot a 46, but the Vikings bowed to unbeaten Barrington 170-205 at Newport Country Club on Tuesday.
Colby Fahrney and Kaden Kluth, Portsmouth track
Fahrney placed second in the long jump (20 feet, 9¼ inches) and third in the 200 with a time of 23 seconds at the Sgt. Brian St. Germaine Invitational in West Warwick on Monday. Kluth took second in the 400 (51.78) and teamed with Jeff Brady, Aiden Chen and Tom McGraw to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:36.26
Jason Hayes, Middletown track
The junior thrower qualified for the state meet in the discus as he unfurled a toss of 146 feet, 9 inches at the Sgt. Brian St. Germaine Invitational in West Warwick on Monday. Hayes also came through with a provisional state-qualifying effort in the shot put (40-9).
Monday's stars
Savannah Hollins and Mia DeSantis, Middletown softball
The two hitters accounted for two of the three Middletown inside-the-park home runs as the host Islanders topped Exeter-West Greenwich 12-2 on Monday. Hollins hit a grand slam homer and DeSantis had a two-run shot and a base hit good for three RBIs.

Johnny Lopes and James Cawley, Middletown golf
Lopes led the Islanders with a 44 — the third lowest score of the day — and Cawley shot a 49 from the No. 5 position in the lineup as the Islanders swept East Providence 199-207 and St. Raphael 199-247 at Agawam Hunt Club on Monday.
Luc Lavigueur, Rogers baseball
The senior pitcher threw five scoreless innings, allowed three hits and struck out nine, but the Vikings' bats were silent the entire game as Rogers bowed to Johnston 6-0 at Cardines Field on Monday.
Grace Boneu and Kaitlin Roche, Portsmouth girls lacrosse
Boneu notched seven goals and assisted on two, and Roche had two goals and four assists for host Portsmouth, which downed Cranston West 17-5 on Monday to remain undefeated in Division II.
Jordan Panell and Kyle Rogers, Tiverton baseball
Panell and Rogers supplied most of the offense from the sixth and seventh spots in the batting order, each finishing with two hits and two RBIs to lift host Tiverton to a 6-1 win over Exeter-West Greenwich on Monday and push its winning streak to four games.
Makenna Gilman and Kate Stahl, Middletown girls lacrosse
Middletown goalie Gilman made 17 saves and Stahl tallied four goals and added an assist as host Middletown fell to LaSalle 19-13 on Monday.
Luis Betancourt, Rogers boys track
Betancourt came through with fifth-place finishes in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.35 seconds and the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.03) at Monday’s Brian St. Germain Invitational in West Warwick.
Seth Aguiar and Miles Cormier, Tiverton boys lacrosse
The two freshmen had a goal and assist each, but the host Tigers couldn’t produce much more on offense as they fell to North Smithfield 5-4 in overtime Monday. Both teams are now 7-2 and tied for second place in Division IV.
Alistair McClurg, Middletown tennis
Playing at No. 3 singles, McClurg came through with the lone Middletown solo win, and the Islanders also swept the doubles matches as they prevailed 4-3 over Ponaganset on Monday at windy Gaudet Middle School.
“McClurg had a tough matchup at third singles,” Middletown coach Eric Wright said. “He stepped up for the team when we really needed it.”
Dylan Lacchi and Patrick Stahl, Rogers boys lacrosse
Lacchi raced from the defensive end to the offensive zone to score a goal and Stahl made 15 saves as the Vikings fell to Toll Gate 11-3 on Monday at Toppa Field.
