Southwest Airlines computers went down at the Phoenix airport today. Here's what happened

Stormy weather in Phoenix early Thursday morning caused a computer system outage for Southwest Airlines at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, delaying and canceling flights.

As of 11 a.m. Thursday, FlightAware reported 144 delayed flights and 25 canceled flights at Sky Harbor. Most of those were Southwest flights, with 81 delays and 24 cancellations reported.

Southwest Airlines spokesman Dan Landson said in a statement that the airline lost connectivity to computer systems affected by early morning storms.

Heavy rainfall flooded roadways and caused power outages throughout the Phoenix area, according to the Flood Control District of Maricopa County.

By mid-morning, Southwest staff resumed its operations. The issue only affected flights out of Sky Harbor, Landson said.

What to know if you're flying through Phoenix

Southwest and Sky Harbor staff encourage people to check their flight status for delays or cancellations before heading to the airport.

Southwest customers can go to Southwest.com or check the Southwest app for updates.

Travelers should allow themselves plenty time to check in and get through security, airport spokesman Eric Everts said.

People can check TSA wait times at skyharbor.com.

It's recommended that flyers get to the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights, Everts said.
