Tom Allen apparently had a pretty idea what he wanted as a defensive coordinator, because two days after it was announced that Charlton Warren would leave Indiana for North Carolina, the IU coach already has his successor pegged.

Minnesota defensive line coach Chad Wilt will replace Warren as Indiana's defensive coordinator, a source confirmed to the Herald-Times on Monday.

Wilt was with the Golden Gophers for the last two seasons. He has also been a defensive line coach at Cincinnati (2019) Army (2016-18) Maryland (2014-15) Ball State (2011-13), Richmond (2010), Virginia (2009), Liberty (2006-08), Central Connecticut State (2001-03). He's a native of Carlisle, Pa., but played his college football as a defensive end at Taylor University in Upland, ind., from 1996-1999. His father Steve was the head coach at Taylor from 1994-2005.

Early 2022 depth chart peek: 'Pruning' of IU roster means a lot of new faces.

Minnesota's defense finished second in the Big Ten in scoring defense this season, allowing just 17.3 points per game. It also finished second in total defense, rushing defense and passing defense. One of Wilt's pupils, defensive end Boye Mafe, finished 10th in the conference in sacks with seven and among the league's leaders in tackles for loss with 10.

During his time at Maryland, Wilt coached three defensive linemen who were taken in the NFL draft -- Yannick Ngakoue (third round, Jacksonville Jaguars, 2016), Quinton Jefferson (fifth round, Seattle Seahawks, 20160 and Darius Kilgo (sixth round, Denver Broncos, 2015). He also coached Jonathan Newsome at Ball State before Newsome was taken in the fifth round by the Colts in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Charlton Warren departed Saturday to be co-defensive coordinator at North Carolina, joining Gene Chizik on Mack Brown's staff. The Hoosisers' defense backslid in his lone season as DC, finishing 14th in the conference in scoring defense and 10th in total defense in 2021 as the Hoosiers finished a disappointing 2-10, 0-9 in the Big Ten after beginning the year ranked in the Top 25.
