Sophie Ellis-Bextor has shared a gruesome photo of her injuries following a roadside crash.

The 'Murder on the Dancefloor' singer was left bloodied and bruised this week after she "took a tumble from the tow path down to the side of the Thames" while out for a bike ride.

Ellis-Bextor posted a photo of herself being treated in hospital on Instagram, but left the photo in black and white because her injuries were so severe.

"I am ok, just a bit bruised and sore," she wrote. "I want to thank the ambulance crew and the staff at west mid hospital (where I was born, as it happens) for gluing me back together."

The 41-year-old singer-songwriter also credited four runners who were "calm, thoughtful and reassuring" while stopping to help her after the accident.

Friends and fans were understandably alarmed by the graphic photo, with DJ Lauren Laverne responding: "SOPHIE NO! Hope you're all mended soon!"

"Oh my goodness," new mum Natalie Imbruglia added. "So glad you are ok. Sending love."

Ellis-Bextor responded to her concerned friends by editing her post with an update about her condition after recuperating for a night.

"Thank you for all the lovely messages," she wrote. "I should have said that the main reason I posted was to thank the incredible folk who stopped and helped (although the sympathy is very cheering) so don't worry I'm ok and being well looked after.

"[Husband Richard Jones] has been amazing and the kids are being very sweet ❤️ Lots of love."

Aside from her many hit singles, many Strictly Come Dancing viewers will remember Ellis-Bextor's impressive fourth place finish on the BBC show back in the 2013 final with professional partner Brendan Cole.
