Side-eyeing toddler meme from years ago becomes NFT worth over $76,000 in cryptocurrency

A popular meme from 2013 that shows a toddler side-eyeing the camera just sold for $76,377.50 in cryptocurrency.

Chloe Clem's unimpressed facial expression from eight years ago when her mother told her she was taking the kids to Disneyland – instead of school – became a household meme (Side Eyeing Chloe) and later, nonfungible token (NFT).

Now the Clem family is cashing in on the meme that drove the then-2-year-old's face to appear on T-shirts and bumper stickers. The Clem family auctioned its NFT, and it was bought by 3F Music, a Dubai-based music production company, according to the BBC.

Clem's side-eye became an internet sensation back in 2013 because it prompted users around the world to follow up with saying, "same" to describe life predicaments or dilemmas. It's been viewed more than 20 million times.

NFTs generally represent specific versions of digital files, although an NFT could also be assigned to an object. Other similar memes have generated even bigger dollar signs via NFTs. Overly Attached Girlfriend – a woman smiling into the camera, eyes wide – made $411,000. Doge, a meme of a Shiba Inu, went on to cash in for $4 million this past June.

Little did mother Katie Clem know a recorded video of her daughters would lead to an unexpected college fund. In the 2013 clip, she tells her two daughters that she's not driving them to school and that they're going to Disneyland for the day. Sister Lily Clem breaks down into tears out of excitement. Chloe, meanwhile, is unfazed as ever and not feeling the change of plans.

The NFT for the meme of Chloe, now 10, sold on her sister Lily’s 16th birthday.

“It was a great, great day,” Katie Clem told The Washington Post. “It’s been a really fun thing as our family to do. It’s actually brought us a lot closer over the last few weeks of just trying to figure out everything.”
