'Shrill' Is Coming Back For Season 3

Two months after Shrill debuted its second season on Hulu, Variety reports that season 3 is on the way. Below, everything we know about where Annie (Aidy Bryant) and the rest of the The Weekly Thorn staff are headed next.
When will season 3 of Shrill premiere?
No premiere date is set for a third season, although Variety reports season 3 will be eight episodes. Season 2, also eight episodes, premiered in January 2020. Meanwhile, the first season debuted in March 2019 with six episodes. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Shrill typically shoots during Bryant's summer hiatus from Saturday Night Live. Filming on SNL is currently delayed due to COVID-19 safety concerns.
What will the third season be about?
The season 2 finale of Shrill saw Annie break things off with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Ryan (Luka Jones) an episode after an in-office hookup between the pair threatened her career aspirations. In happier news, Annie managed to break new ground with her mother Vera (Julia Sweeney), while her roommate Fran (Lolly Adefope) embarked on a new romance after a period of self-imposed celibacy.
Bryant told THR that she "would love to do a third season." She also delved into what that could mean for Annie:
We have so many ideas that I feel like I would be so excited to weave in there. I think part of what I would be excited to show is that yes, she has come to the other side of some of her insecurities, but they do rear their ugly head. I think having to put yourself out there in the dating world is, like, trigger city. And we got into it a little bit this season—like in the sixth episode you see Annie have chub rub—but I would love to go a little deeper on some of the daily indignities of living with a body that sometimes betrays you or that other people have feelings about, and having to suffer those. I just feel like there's so much more to be said and to be done with it.
Who is involved?
Most of the cast members are set to return to the series, which is inspired by Lindy West's Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman. In addition to Bryant, Adefope, Jones, and Sweeney, the cast includes Ian Owens, Patti Harrison, and John Cameron Mitchell as Annie's co-workers at The Weekly Thorn.
Season 2 also introduced a potential new love interest for Annie. In episode 7, she met Nick (Anthony Oberbeck), a similarly career-minded illustrator who designed Annie's favorite Thorn cover.
