Sean Payton says Broncos turning things around ‘starts with me’

Mathematically, the Denver Broncos’ season is not lost after a 0-2 start. Historically, previous 0-2 starts suggest the Broncos are unlikely to reach the playoffs this season.

Following a loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Payton wasn’t interested in talking about that history.

“I get it, and I get that we’re going to write and talk about it,” Payton said when asked about the team’s 0-2 start. “I can’t change that we’re 0-2, but I can certainly change how we approach the next game and prepare to play the third game. That’s all we can do.”

The Broncos squandered a 21-3 lead last week in an eventual 35-33 loss to the Commanders. Apart from special teams, it was an all-around disappointing performance.

“We didn’t play good enough on either side,” Payton said. “I thought in the kicking game we were solid. It’s disappointing. It’s disappointing because you get something to start off the way you want, early, and then you kind of give them a chance to get back into it, and they’re a good enough team. Our league’s good enough when those opportunities arise. We have to be better than that, and that starts with me.”

Payton’s squad will have their first opportunity to do “better” when they go on the road to face the Miami Dolphins in Week 3.
