An investigation is underway after a Scott County High School student displayed inappropriate behavior that was “insensitive to the African American community,” according to a statement from Billy Parker, superintendent of Scott County Schools.

The behavior was displayed at a recent Scott County High School football game, according to Parker. While Parker didn’t elaborate on what actually happened, LEX18 reported that one student showed up to the game completely covered in black body paint.

The theme of the game was a “black out,” which is when fans typically wear black-colored apparel to show support for the home team. Parker said the school promoted the theme, even selling black t-shirts and encouraging student attendance.

However, the school does not support the discriminatory behavior of any type or for any reason, Parker said in the statement Thursday.

“We cannot make Scott County the best place in the world to live and learn for everyone unless we are willing to acknowledge when we can do better,” Parker said in the statement. “This is one of those moments and we will rise to the occasion.”

Parker said the school district will use this incident to educate the student community on how certain behaviors are never acceptable due to their historical context.
