School district to sell impounded cars
If you are looking for a used car, Cleveland County Schools has some it needs to sell.
Later this month, the school district will open an auction for 11 used cars it has taken possession of in recent years.
The vehicles, which range from some mid '90s model Chevrolet Cavalier and Suburban models, a Toyota Corolla, a Nissan Maxima and a 2011 model Suzuki moped, were surrendered to the school system by law enforcement.
According to state law, any driver charged with DWI may have their vehicle seized if they were driving with a revoked license, as can any driver who flees from police in a vehicle.
As part of their court proceedings, drivers will have an option to get back their vehicle so long as they pay all of the fees associated with towing and storing them, but if they wait too long, the district is allowed to sell the vehicle and use the money to fund district operations.
"We use the money here to buy items we need at the bus garage that we wouldn't normally be able to get," said David Pless, transportation director at Cleveland County Schools. "We've used it to buy new tools so that we can work on busses, one year we were able to buy a new pressure washer."
Cars will be auctioned online via govdeals.com. Once bought, cars will need to be picked up from the bus garage at Cleveland County Schools.
They are not always guaranteed to run, Pless said.
"Most of the time when somebody runs from the police, the car may be wrecked when they get done running from police. It all just depends," he said.
Cleveland County Schools does two car auctions a year, once in the spring as people start receiving their tax returns, and again in November, when people are looking for vehicles to give as Christmas gifts.
With the offerings available this spring, Pless said he expects they will sell pretty cheaply.
"I expect with the 11 cars we have, we may get about $10,000," he said.
