San Elizario high school softball player Kera Munoz aims to finish career on high note

Keara Munoz was a consistently successful presence in her high school softball career at San Elizario and it was during her senior season where she found the most success.

Munoz, a senior, will play her final high school game on Tuesday in the first Greater El Paso Girls Coaches Association All-Star game at the Eastwood High School Softball Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., which follows a Home Run Derby contest.

Munoz helped guided the Eagles to the program's first bi-district championship along with a District 2-4A championship. She hit .500 at the plate with 29 RBI and 34 runs scored and in the circle she went 11-3 with 145 strikeouts.

"I loved the game so much and it was a big part of my life," Munoz said. "I played hard, wanted our team to be the very best we could be. This year was a great one for us and we accomplished so much. Winning district and bi-district titles were important to the program and I hope this year's team can help build a foundation for the future."

San Elizario softball coach Angel Gonzalez credited Munoz as being a major factor in helping the young Eagles squad succeed.

"When I was named the head coach during her junior season, I was nervous because she had some high expectations for herself and the team," Gonzalez said. "Keara is selfless, she's a leader and she just wanted the very best for the team. Keara would do what she could to be a winner and that's what she is."

Munoz also played volleyball at SEHS and this past year she joined the highly successful soccer team and scored a handful of goals.

"To have the opportunity to contribute to both volleyball and soccer meant a lot," Munoz said. "I joined the soccer team this season and it was fun. I had great teammates and coaches and it gave me a chance to do something different and I had so much fun."

Munoz had three offers to play college softball, but instead chose to serve her country and has enlisted in the Navy.

"I love to try new things, love to travel and I want to go out on my own and be independent," Munoz said. "I'm excited for my journey in to the Navy and see where that leads me."

Munoz has a passion for writing and perhaps a future in that profession awaits her.

"I just want to continue to grow as a person. I love writing and that's a great way to express yourself," Munoz said. "But I want to enjoy the All-Star game, I'm grateful for this opportunity and then I'll enjoy a few weeks with family and friends before heading to the Navy. I'm eager to see what happens in the future."
