Rootstown bowler Joey Andrews rolls 300 game at Spins Bowl Kent

It is only two weeks into the OHSAA high school bowling season but additional practice wasn’t needed for Joey Andrews of Rootstown.

The Rover senior tossed a perfect game at Spins Bowl in Kent for his first 300 game. Andrews' highest game previously was a 278 in youth leagues at Spins.

Thom Butcher, coach of the Rovers, was excited and elated for Andrews. “The final 10 strikes were deep in the pocket,” said Butcher.

Andrews helped the Rovers top both Berkshire and East Canton. Andrews' teammates also fired solid games including Carson Flowers (234-216 450) and Justin Miller (225).

Andrews 300 was his second game of a two as he finished with an outstanding 504 series.

Ravenna boys bowling team is undefeated

The Ravenna boys varsity team is off to a good start this season, owning a 2-0 record following their victory over Cloverleaf at Spins Bowl in Kent.

Jacob Champ led the team with 415 series including a 225 high game as the Ravens defeated Cloverleaf 2,494-1,958.

Crestwood sweeps match against Bedford

The Crestwood boys and girls topped Bedford at Sky Lanes in Garrettsville.

The Red Devils bested Bedford 1,798-1,221. Brooklyn Horner fired the high game (228-403) with Emily Linamen adding the high series of 412 with games of 211-201.

The boys' match was a bit closer as the Red Devils beat Bedford 1,849-1,702.

Kyler Guy rolled a 232 high game on his way to a 445 series for Crestwood.

Rootstown girls have six returning letter winners

The Rover girls are looking forward to a successful season with six returning letter winners for the reigning Portage Trail Conference champions.

Coach Tom Day is looking to not only repeat as the league champion but seeking a berth at the OHSAA district tournament.

Returning letter winners are junior Payton Curall, the reigning PTC Player of the year, and three first-team All-PTC selections — senior Tracey Lohman, juniors Maggie Frick and Natalie Hammerschmidt and sophomores Emma Day and Cassie Egli.

Day and Egli were district qualifiers in 2021.

Day is looking forward to the talent that juniors Elli Campbell, Audrey Francis, Gracie Frick and Mallory Butcher add to the team.

The team is off to a good start, placing second in the Ravenna Invitational as Curall rolled 276-572, good for a second-place individual medal.

Sectional preview tournament at Spins Bowl

Rootstown will host the 16th Sectional Preview Tournament at Spins Bowl in Kent.

Scheduled for the Martin Luther King weekend, Division I teams bowl Jan. 14 and Division II teams on Jan. 15. There are only a few spots available for the event that fills fast.

Registration is $100 a team for the tournament which includes each team bowling three regular games and six Baker games.

Trophies and individual medals will be awarded.
