Rookie Colts QB Anthony Richardson making 360-degree spike his signature TD celebration

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (5) celebrates a touchdown during the second half of the game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Colts lost in overtime, 29-23.

INDIANAPOLIS — The first time Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson did the spike, leaping into the air in joy, twisting entirely around and firing the ball into the turf, he was just acting on instinct.

Doing what felt right in the moment.

Richardson plays with a pure, unfiltered sense of joy, and the 360-degree spike initially erupted out of that emotion.

“The first time I didn’t necessarily plan it,” Richardson said. “I don’t know what got into me and made me do it.”

But it looked great, and Richardson’s friends and family started telling the rookie Colts quarterback he should make the 360-degree spike his calling card in the end zone.

Richardson liked the sound of that.

“I was looking for a signature celebration,” Richardson said. “That’s the one that stuck.”

Richardson is far from the first quarterback to have a signature celebration.

Cam Newton pantomimed ripping open his shirt to reveal Superman’s suit underneath. Aaron Rodgers always put on a championship belt.

Richardson believes he’s found his own now.
