Diamondbacks deal Andrew Chafin to Brewers for Peter Strzelecki
The Arizona Diamondbacks made another trade to address their bullpen on Tuesday by sending left-hander Andrew Chafin to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for right-handed reliever Peter Strzelecki.
The Diamondbacks felt comfortable flipping Chafin in part because they have other left-handed relief options in Kyle Nelson and Joe Mantiply, the latter of whom has been in Triple-A Reno for most of the past month but was recalled Tuesday after Chafin was dealt. The club also has left-hander Tyler Gilbert, who has thrown effectively in six appearances over the past three weeks.
Chafin has had a rollercoaster year. He was unscored upon in 14 of 15 appearances to start the year, holding down the closer’s role for the first two months of the season. He has been less reliable in recent weeks, posting a 5.79 ERA in 17 appearances since the start of June.
Chafin is still owed the prorated amount remaining on the one-year, $6.25 million deal he signed in February.
Strzelecki, 28, has a 4.54 ERA in 35 2/3 innings for the Brewers this year with 37 strikeouts and 10 walks. He averages 91-92 mph on his two-seam/four-seam fastballs and relies heavily on a slider, a pitch that gets whiffs 30.9 percent of the time. He also throws the occasional change-up.
In parts of two seasons, Strzelecki has a 3.69 ERA in 70 2/3 innings in the majors. He will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2028 season.
Strzelecki was optioned to Triple-A Reno, where he will serve as right-handed relief depth. The Diamondbacks have cycled through a variety of right-handed relief options with only limited success, giving chances to the likes of Carlos Vargas, Jose Ruiz, Justin Martinez, Cole Sulser, Luis Frias and others.
