Portion of Greenville road named in honor of Spinx gas station founder Stewart Spinks
More than 50 years ago, Stewart Spinks opened a convenience store and gas station at the corner of East Washington Street and Laurens Road in Greenville.
Now, a portion of that street has been dedicated in his honor.
A ceremony was held on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at the Spinx corporate headquarters at 1414 E. Washington St., across from the first Spinx location in South Carolina. The renaming honored Spinks because of his philanthropy, local impact and commitment to Greenville.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation and the Spinx Company worked together to rename a portion of East Washington to Stewart Spinks Road.
The renamed road will extend from East Washington Street and McBee Avenue to the corner of East Washington and Laurens Road, which covers a mile-and-a-half stretch.
