Police: Woman refuses to leave Tamaqua pool, assaults officer
Jul. 27—TAMAQUA — A woman was jailed and a police officer injured after an incident around 3:15 p.m. Friday at the Bungalow Pool.
Tamaqua Police Chief Michael Hobbs said officers were called for a disturbance involving three females who were refusing to leave after being asked to do so for playing loud music through a large Bluetooth speaker.
The music, an uncensored version of the rapper Cardi B's "WAP" song, the chief said, has offensive language and racial slurs.
When officers arrived, Hobbs said they asked the mother, Stephanie Crute, 36, of Cherry Street, Tamaqua, along with her daughters, to leave but they refused.
Hobbs said Crute pushed one of the officers as his back was toward her and, when other officers tried to handcuff her, she resisted and started punching at the officers and other pool patrons.
The chief said Crute's 11-year-old daughter also attacked an officer from behind as he was attempting to place Crute in handcuffs.
While handcuffed, Crute continued to kick an officer before she was put in the back of a police cruiser. Hobbs said one officer had to go to a local hospital due to an injury received in the altercation.
Crute was charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault and resisting arrest, and summary harassment and disorderly conduct.
She was arraigned Friday and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post 10% of $25,000 bail. The 11-year-old daughter was released to the custody of her father. Crute subsequently posted bail on Monday, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Stephen J. Bayer in his Tamaqua courtroom has been scheduled for Aug. 3.
