6 People Killed in Jersey City Shooting Incident, Including 2 Suspects

Six people were killed, including at least one police officer and the two suspects, in a shooting that unfolded in two locations in Jersey City, New Jersey, a law enforcement source confirms to PEOPLE.

The source tells PEOPLE the two suspects are dead, and there are no more outstanding suspects.

According to the source, a police officer was fatally shot in a cemetery while conducting a homicide investigation and approaching the suspects. Subsequently, the suspects fled to a kosher market.

After a police standoff at the store, five people were found dead. Two were suspects and three were innocent civilians.

In addition to the six people killed, two police officers and one civilian were non-fatally shot and are in stable condition.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office encouraged people to avoid the area surrounding Martin Luther King Boulevard and Bayview Avenue.

The source previously told PEOPLE police were looking for two suspects who are wearing all black.

Jersey City Public Schools wrote on Twitter that all schools are currently on lockdown because of the shooting. All students and staff are safe.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy wrote on Twitter, “I have been briefed on the unfolding situation in jersey City. our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department, especially with the officers shot during this standoff, and with the residents and school children currently under lockdown.”

The New Jersey State Patrolman’s Benevolent Association wrote on Twitter, “Today is a horrific day…. We need prayers.”

Jersey City is just across the Hudson River from New York City. Its population is about 250,000.
