Police: Girl who died, injured teen were robbing 19-year-old killed in shooting

An 18-year-old had been charged with murder in the deaths of two other teens, Nonaisha Jones and Logan Lawson, in what investigators are saying was a robbery that turned violent.

The 18-year-old, Jaylan Dubose of Winton Hills, was also shot during the incident that killed Jones and Lawson, court records state. Police say he is still recovering from the injuries he sustained.

Jones was only 15 and Lawson was 19, according to police.

Investigators have pieced together a convoluted story of armed robbery, according to court records.

The records state Jones and Dubose were working together to try to rob Lawson and another unnamed person on Joyce Lane in Roselawn on Tuesday evening. Lawson and the unnamed person were in a vehicle together, police said.

Police have not said what Jones and Dubose were trying to take.

During the robbery, Dubose, Jones and Lawson were all shot. Investigators have not said who fired or if there was an exchange of gunfire.

Following the shooting, Dubose was found shot on Reading Road more than half a mile away from the site of the initial robbery, police said.

Somehow, Jones and Lawson ended up in the same car. Investigators have not said how or why that happened.

Norwood police responded to that car for a report of a shooting victim. Officers found the car in the 4900 block of Montgomery Road about two miles away from the site of the robbery, investigators said.

Jones was found dead in the backseat of the car and Lawson was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he, too, later died.

Police have not said what happened to the fourth person present at the shooting.

Dubose has been charged, but not yet arrested. Because he is still recovering, it is unclear when he will appear in court.

Ohio law allows Dubose to be charged with the deaths of Jones and Lawson even if he did not directly kill them. If a death happens in connection with the commission of a felony, anyone involved in perpetrating that felony can be charged with murder.

The Winton Woods High School football team tweeted about Lawson on Wednesday and retweeted information about a balloon release planned for Lawson at the high school at 7 p.m. Friday.

Lawson played football at Winton Woods High School and graduated in 2021, Fox19 reported. His father Scotty Lawson told Fox19 that his son “was an awesome big brother and awesome friend” and that his death has left the family in shock.
