‘Because of my fight with my homeboy.’ Suspect arrested in Key West stabbing
A man received serious stab wounds after a fight with another man in a Key West park Tuesday evening, according to police.
The wounded man was identified in an arrest report released Wednesday as Christopher Spikes, 46. Police say he was stabbed by Willie Scott, a 32-year-old man who is homeless.
According to Scott’s arrest report, witnesses say they saw the two men having a friendly conversation sitting at a picnic table at Pines Park on South Roosevelt Boulevard near Key West International Airport.
Then Spikes stood up and began shouting at Scott, according to police detective Darnell Sealey’s report. The argument led to the two trading punches. A witness tried to break up the fight, but the two men kept hitting one another, Sealey said.
Spikes eventually fell to the ground, and Scott ran to the table and grabbed what witness told police looked like a steak knife. Spikes appeared to have given up and began walking away. As he did, Scott stabbed him in the back of the leg, then stabbed him three or four more times as he lay on the ground, according to the report.
Monroe County Fire Rescue paramedics flew Spikes from Key West International Airport to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, the report states. As he was being prepped for flight, he was in critical but stable condition, Sealey said.
After the stabbing, witnesses said they saw Scott walk toward the Fort East Martello Museum about a block away on South Roosevelt Boulevard, still holding the knife.
As detectives worked the crime scene at Pines Park, Scott came back without the knife, shirtless, wearing shorts and red socks, Sealey said.
When they asked him why they wanted to talk to him, Scott replied, “Because of my fight with my homeboy,” the report states.
On Wednesday morning, Scott was being held in Monroe County jail on Stock Island without bond on attempted murder and weapons charges.
