De Pere's Corrigan, New London's Krueger lead area winners at WIAA state girls wrestling
LA CROSSE – Brooke Corrigan might not immediately understand the gravity of her accomplishment Saturday at the inaugural WIAA state girls wrestling championships at the La Crosse Center.
But there will be plenty of time for the De Pere wrestler to reflect on her gold medal journey as the talented 100-pound freshman will forever be remembered as not only participating in the first state girls finals match, but also becoming the first girls champion.
Corrigan beat Karina Torres of Kenosha Indian Trail 7-5 to secure the first championship to kick off the tournament's 12 title matches.
"I’m still somewhat shaking still after the match," Corrigan said. "It’s just an honor to be the first ever. It’s going to go down in history. That’s exciting."
Corrigan was joined by three other champions from the USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin coverage area: Koressa Allgeyer of Marinette, Caitlyn Kelley of Florence/Niagara and Hailie Krueger of New London.
Allgeyer recorded a 16-6 major decision victory over Florence/Niagara's Sophia Wagner to win the 107-pound weight class. Kelley also won her 120-pound championship by major decision, defeating Bonduel's Hailey Berg 10-0. Krueger secured her championship at 145 by outlasting Cuba City's Chloe LaRue in a 5-3 tiebreaker.
Sean Corrigan, Brooke's father and coach at the tournament, said Brooke winning a state championship is big not only for the family but also for the younger female wrestlers who have interest in the sport.
"Those girls are thinking the same thing," Sean said while gesturing to Brooke interacting with friends who are also wrestling hopefuls. "They see what happened and look at this in a few years. This will keep getting bigger and bigger. It's a big deal for these girls."
Allgeyer, a junior, rattled off three consecutive pins to get to the semifinals at 107, where she was able to decision Amherst's Lia Peterson 7-2 before beating Wagner in the finals.
She said she's already thinking about her senior season and doesn't see next year as defending her state title.
"I'm going to look at it more like how can I improve more?" she said. "Like how can I get to my college and then from college going on to the Olympics, where I want to end up. It's all about the process."
Krueger, a freshman, had three consecutive pins to reach her 145 final where she faced LaRue, who won two of her first three matches by pin. The two battled into overtime where Krueger was able to get a pair of escapes before hanging on and avoiding a takedown to get the title.
"I'm still a little surprised and still processing it," Krueger said. "But I'm super proud of my teammates that helped me get here and all the girls that worked so hard before us to make this possible for us. I'm just so grateful and happy."
Other wrestlers reaching the title matches in their respective weight classes were Wagner (107), Mya Delleree of Ozaukee (114), Berg (120), Madalyn Sokolski of Bonduel (132), Sophia Galoff of Brillion (138) and Brindelyn Eternicka of Merrill (185).
Delleree lost by fall to Sun Prairie's Bopasoreya Quintana, with Sokolski falling by major decision to Mineral Point's Kylie Rule.
Galoff, a sophomore, was pinned by Brookfield Central's Marisa Roth with Eternicka also losing by fall to Spring Valley/Elmwood's Lyndsey Stark.
Third-place finishers included Peterson of Amherst (107), Brooke Schuenemann of Plymouth (120), Arial Haemmerle of Winneconne (185), and Kaylee McFadden (145) and Katelyn Lewis (165) of Marinette.
