Pedestrian, 31, dies after being hit by an SUV while walking dog in Sacramento County, CHP says
A 31-year-old man died after being hit around 3 a.m. Friday by an SUV in south Sacramento, authorities said.
The pedestrian, identified as Sergio Roberto Rojas of Sacramento, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The driver, a 42-year-old Elk Grove woman, was traveling westbound on Calvine Road in a 2015 Toyota RAV4 when she struck the man, who was walking westbound in the bike lane with his dog and shopping cart bicycle, the California High Patrol’s South Sacramento office said in a news release. The collision caused him to land in the roadway.
The woman pulled to the right, stopped her vehicle and waited for CHP officers to arrive. When authorities arrived, she was transported to a hospital for precautionary measures.
Alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors on behalf of the driver. It is unknown whether the pedestrian was under the influence, CHP officials said.
The pedestrian’s dog remained at the scene and was later taken by animal control, authorities said.
The intersection was closed for investigation but has since reopened.
